Du-par's Legendary Pancake Batter Will Get You Through Lockdown

LOS ANGELES, CA —Even coronavirus woes can't keep Los Angeles shut-ins from Du-par's buttermilk hot cakes — once hailed in an Esquire review as the "Best Pancakes In U.S."

Du-par’s Restaurant & Bakery, along with other restaurants throughout California, last month swiveled to take-out-only in keeping with COVID-19 mandates. And listed on the diner's to-go menu and selling fast is its coveted buttermilk-pancake mix, available in 16-ounce and 32-ounce containers.

Du-par's loyal customers are "flabbergasted" to learn they can purchase the mix and whip up at home a batch of "Best Pancakes in the U.S.," said Frances Tario, president and CEO of Du-par's, a Farmers Market staple since 1938.

"The response has been tremendous, especially now with the stay-at-home ordinance," she said.

The pancakes, from a recipe so top secret it's locked in a safe, have earned raves over the years, including the high "Best in U.S." praise from Esquire.

"The pancakes at Du-Par’s are 'legendary' for a reason," says Los Angeles Magazine, ranking the flapjacks among the Top 12 in Greater LA. "They’re already buttery; pour on the extra butter, swirl in some syrup, and you’ll dine in paradise," reports RoadFood.com. These "were the best pancakes we’d ever eaten—our expectations were exceeded, and then some," according to the Gastronomy blog.

Du-par's offers the mix on its curbside pick-up and delivery menus, along with its new Blue Plate Specials — $40 dinners for four — including such comfort classics as Chicken Pot Pie, Turkey Dinner with all the trimmings, and a Macaroni & Cheese Casserole.
