City Commissions Have More Women Than Men: First Time In History

"Women bring an important perspective, and we make better decisions when women lead and are at the table," Long Beach mayor said.

LONG BEACH, CA – For the first time in Long Beach's history, its commissions are made up of a majority of women, officials said Wednesday.

At Tuesday's City Council meeting, the appointments of six women were announced, and female commissioners now hold 52 percent of the positions, with 114 women holding seats on city commissions and boards.

"When I was elected four years ago, I set a goal of appointing more women to our commissions," Mayor Robert Garcia said. "Women bring an important perspective, and we make better decisions when women lead and are at the table."
