25 Years as a Long Beach Mobile Notary—and a First Visit to the Skinny House!

25 Years as a Long Beach Mobile Notary—and a First Visit to the Skinny House!

You never know what you'll come across during a workday in Long Beach!

Earlier this week, a mobile notary appointment took me to the Rose Park neighborhood, where I helped a family notarize legal documents.

While I was in the neighborhood, I finally got to see one of Long Beach's most unusual landmarks—the famous Skinny House!

I've traveled through most Long Beach neighborhoods during my 25 years as a mobile notary, but somehow I'd never seen it in person. It's certainly not something you see every day.

A Little Long Beach History

Located on Gladys Avenue, the Skinny House was built in 1932 on a lot measuring just 10 feet wide and 50 feet deep.

The story behind it is almost as interesting as the house itself.

Newton Rummond reportedly acquired the narrow lot as payment for a $100 debt. When friends told him the property was too small to build on, he accepted a dare to prove otherwise.

And he did!

The three-story home eventually attracted national attention, including a feature in Ripley's Believe It or Not!, and was designated a Long Beach historic landmark in 1983.

Not bad for a house built on a dare!
