Long Beach's Beach Streets University Returns After Hiatus
After a two-year hiatus, the event returns for more family fun with music, food, activities and more.

LONG BEACH, CA — East Long Beach's Beach Streets University event is back for more family fun after a two-year long hiatus.
The day-long event on Sept. 17 will span neighborhoods from Atherton Street to Spring Street and feature many entertainment hubs as people bike the route. People can bike, walk and socialize from Atherton Street by California State University, Long Beach, up Bellflower Boulevard to Los Coyotes Diagonal, and across to Spring Street to Studebaker Road.
“We’re so excited for Beach Streets University to be back,” Mayor Robert Garcia said. “This is an amazing event that brings our community together in a safe and family friendly day. I’ll be on my bike all day and can’t wait to see everyone.”

The streets will be closed to vehicles and anything with a motor as people enjoy outdoor music, food and drink specials, activities and even a designated children's area at Whaley Park. Community groups will also be participating with information booths, active-living activitities and other demonstrations.
Beach streets began in 2015 as a way for Long Beach to show that streets can be used for much more environmental means than driving. Open streets events happen throughout North America to promote communities to strive toward better environmental, social, economic and public health goals.

“Beach Streets quickly became a staple for our community, and we’re excited to host its return here in East Long Beach,” said Councilwoman Stacy Mungo Flanigan. “Neighbors, friends and families are encouraged to come out, connect and celebrate our great city.”
