🦃 Thanksgiving Poll!
Thanksgiving is on November 24th. How do you celebrate? So far, 45.5% celebrate a big meal as a family tradition, while 22.7% don't celebrate and treat it like any other day. In a smaller group, 4.5% don't celebrate because they feel it glorifies the conquest of Native Americans; however, 27.3% choose to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving out of gratitude.
📰 Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
1) The City Council is doubling down on its commitment to the Queen Mary's restoration. It voted unanimously on Tuesday to spend $1 million more on needed work "identified by the company tasked with reopening and operating the historic ocean liner." The goal is still to reopen at least some parts of the ship "by the end of the year." (Long Beach Post)
2) Good Time Charlie plans to open the First National Tattoo Art Museum in Long Beach. He points to The Pike, which "has held a record for the best and largest population of well-respected tattoo artists," as the reason to select this city as the location. Because the undertaking takes money, there's a fundraiser this Saturday at the Expo Arts Center at 4321 Atlantic Boulevard from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. (Tattoo Heritage Project)
3) Long Beach State women's soccer is fourth-seeded after its 2-1 win over UC Santa Barbara. Today, Thursday, the team faces the top-seeded Cal Poly at 7 p.m. The Mustangs will host The Big West Championship. (Go Poly)
4) If you have some time on your hands this Saturday, the Housing and Neighborhood Services team could use some help! There's a tree planting at Silverado park from 9 a.m. to noon. Come to Caspian Avenue and West 32nd Street, and get ready to dig! (Long Beach Builds)
5) The city hosts a family-friendly Day of the Dead celebration this Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. Come to the Rainbow Lagoon on Shoreline Drive, and participate in the festivities. The musical lineup features "Banda La Maravillosa, Buyepongo, La Sonora Dinamita, Las Chicas Tristes (DJ), Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Angeles, MEXIKA Music & Dance of Ancient Mexico, and Nuestras Raices & Yankuititl Aztec Group." (City of Long Beach)
