Vote Long Beach!

The June 3rd election takes place on the same date as the Statewide Primary election. Because of different voting systems and the short duration between the April 8th and June 3rd elections, there isn’t enough time for the City of Long Beach to add the run-off candidates to the County of Los Angeles Ballot.

This means that on June 3rd, Long Beach residents will vote on two ballots, one for State and County candidates and issues, and another for City of Long Beach candidates. Voters will visit two sign-in tables at the same polling place, and will use different voting systems to cast their ballots. Absentee voters will need to vote and send in two ballots, one for the City and another for the County and State.

To help educate Long Beach voters and ensure a smooth election, the Long Beach City Clerk’s office has created “2 Vote Tuesday” – a community outreach campaign explaining the process of “voting twice.”  “The goal is to make sure voters in Long Beach know that they need to sign-in twice and cast two ballots,” says Larry Herrera, City Clerk of Long Beach.  “It’s a minor inconvenience brought on by the tight election schedules, but we want to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard.”  Details concerning 2 Vote Tuesday are included in each registered voter's sample ballot booklet and vote-by-mail (VBM) ballot envelope.

As the City and the County sample ballot booklets and permanent VBM ballots were sent via the United States Postal Service several days apart, voters should know that both may not arrive on the same day.  As of May 12, 2014, 88% of all City of Long Beach permanent VBM ballots have been delivered to voters, with the remaining VBM ballots being delivered on May 12th as well.

In the event that any registered voter does not receive their City of Long Beach sample ballot booklet or permanent VBM ballot, they should call the City Clerk Department at 562-570-6101, or email the City Clerk at larry.herrera@longbeach.gov.
