🦃 Thanksgiving Poll!
Thanksgiving is on November 24th. How do you celebrate? So far, 44.8% celebrate a big meal as a family tradition, while 24.1% don't celebrate and treat it like any other day. In a smaller group, 3.4% don't celebrate because they feel it glorifies the conquest of Native Americans; however, 27.6% choose to celebrate a traditional Thanksgiving out of gratitude.
📰 Here are the top stories in Long Beach today:
1) Willow Street homicide update: Earlier on Thursday, the Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) announced the death of an adult male in the 7400 block of East Willow Street. Later that day, officers announced that it is "being investigated as a justifiable homicide." The victim reportedly attacked a third party with a metallic cable. The party's father stepped in and stopped the attack. The victim is identified as a 48-year-old Murietta resident who died in a homeless camp. (LBPD)
2) On Thursday, officials celebrated the groundbreaking of a new development at Atlantic Boulevard and South Street. When completed in "two years or so," the longtime empty lot will be transformed into "84 residential townhomes and 2,294 square feet of commercial space." Some of the units will have three or four bedrooms. (Long Beach Business Journal)
3) Also on Thursday, the Planning Commission recommended the construction of a "3,000-square-foot medical building" that would be built west of Sunnyside Cemetery, on what is now an empty lot designated as open space. However, officials say that when the City Council approves the project, it corrects a 2018 zoning error. Residents would lose "a picnic area at 2600 California Avenue" and walking paths. Besides that, developers would also have to submit to monitoring by the Kizh Nation "to track the discovery of tribal resources, including burial sites and human remains." (Long Beach Post)
4) The Long Beach Convention Center is home to avatar robots today, Saturday, until 6 p.m. It's the culmination of a "four-year global competition focused on the development of an Avatar System that will transport a human's senses, actions, and presence to a remote location in real-time." The teams here made it to the final round. (Long Beach Convention Center)
5) Mark your calendars! Friday is Veterans Day, and the city will celebrate it on Saturday at Houghton Park. Festivities run from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Entertainment comes courtesy of "Knight Ryder and local Long Beach DJ Dennis Owens." Besides music, a kid zone and food trucks, there will also be a "resource fair with various community organizations providing services and resources for veterans." (Long Beach City Manager)
