Mother and Child Critically Injured in Long Beach Fire

Neighbors say the victims are a mother and her 4-year-old child.

A woman and a 4-year-old child believed to be her daughter were hospitalized in critical condition after being rescued from an apartment fire in Long Beach early today, authorities said.

The two-alarm fire was reported in a third-floor apartment in the 1000 block of Stanley Avenue just after midnight, Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Jake Heflin said.

There were four residents at the apartment, but only two -- the 37-year- old woman the little girl, who neighbors described as her daughter -- were there at the time of the fire, Heflin said.
