3 Killed In Uber Crash, Including 2 Sisters: LA Police

LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CA — Three Uber passengers were killed over the weekend when their rideshare was struck by a vehicle in Westmont, according to police.

Loved ones identified the victims as sisters Kimberly Izquierdo, 27, and Veronica Tatiana Amezola, 23, and their childhood friend, 23-year-old Juvelyn Arroyo. Gregory Black, 31, is charged with vehicular manslaughter in connection with their deaths, police said.

The crash was reported around 5:30 a.m. Saturday at Vermont Avenue and Century Boulevard, according to police. Black was speeding north on Vermont Avenue, ran a red light and hit the Uber, which was headed west on Century Boulevard, police said, adding Black’s vehicle spun out of control and landed on a median.

In addition to the deceased, who were pronounced at the scene, the Uber was occupied by a male passenger and the driver, a 38-year-old woman, according to police, who said Black and the driver were taken to a hospital in stable condition.

In a GoFundMe for Izquierdo and Amezola, the pair were described as “loving sisters who did everything together.” Izquierdo had just graduated nursing school, while Amezola graduated from Cal Poly Humboldt University and recently got a job working with animals for Orange County. Arroyo was a “promising young life taken from us too soon,” said a GoFundMe started in her memory.

“We are heartbroken, and our thoughts are with the families of those involved in this devastating crash,” Uber said in a prepared statement. “We hope the driver and rider who survived recover swiftly.”
