5 Freeway Reopens After Homeland Security Officer Kills Man
The California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert in the Silver Lake area Wednesday when a Homeland Security officer struck a pedestrian.
SILVER LAKE, CA — A Department of Homeland Security vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian early Wednesday, prompting the closure of the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway at Hyperion Avenue in Silver Lake, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The CHP issued a SigAlert that was cleared before the start of the morning rush hour. Officers were called to the scene at 2:15 a.m. and found a man dead at the scene, CHP Officer Patrick Kimball told City News Service. Information on his identity was not immediately available.
Authorities closed several lanes of the freeway to investigate the fatality. The driver, a Homeland Security officer, remained at the scene, said Kimball. It was not immediately known if the DHS officer was on duty, according to Kimball.

A second vehicle was involved, Kimball said. Authorities have not said what caused the crash, and no arrests have been made.
