Officers responded about 5 a.m. Friday to a "hot prowl" burglary call in the 7600 block of South Normandie Avenue, where they were met by a family member who said that two brothers were fighting inside of the home, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

"The officers made entry into the residence and encountered the suspect, later identified as Fredrick Spells, and the victim struggling over a knife while standing in the doorway of a bedroom," according to a police statement. "The officers gave verbal commands to Spells to drop the knife."

Police said officers attempted to use an "intermediate force option" to subdue Spells. When that proved to be ineffective, an officer shot Spells.

Spells was taken into custody and rushed to a hospital. His condition was not immediately known. A knife was recovered at the scene.

No additional information regarding the shooting was immediately released.
