An officer shot and wounded a man who was in a knife fight with his brother, according to police.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Police shot and wounded a man who was in a knife fight with his brother at a South Los Angeles home, authorities said Saturday.

The condition of the wounded suspect was not immediately known.

Officers responded about 5 a.m. Friday to a "hot prowl" burglary call in the 7600 block of South Normandie Avenue, where they were met by a family member who said that two brothers were fighting inside of the home, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

"The officers made entry into the residence and encountered the suspect, later identified as Fredrick Spells, and the victim struggling over a knife while standing in the doorway of a bedroom," according to a police statement. "The officers gave verbal commands to Spells to drop the knife."

Police said officers attempted to use an "intermediate force option" to subdue Spells. When that proved to be ineffective, an officer shot Spells.
