Fatal Crash Shuts Down 5 Freeway Tuesday Morning

A six-vehicle crash shut down part of the 5 Freeway Tuesday morning.

LOS ANGELES, CA — A fatal crash shut down part of the 5 Freeway Tuesday morning near downtown Los Angeles, impacting traffic on several nearby freeways.

The crash involving six vehicles was first reported on the 5 Freeway in Boyle Heights at around 8:26 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and performed lifesaving measures on at least one person who was described as unresponsive.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene and a second was taken to a hospital with unknown injuries, according to a California Highway Patrol officer.

A Sigalert was issued at 8:45 a.m. as authorities shut down all lanes of the northbound 5 Freeway in the area where it meets the 60, 10 and 101 freeways.

Traffic was backed up to Ditman Avenue as of 11:30 a.m.

Motorists were warned to expect delays of up to 20 minutes.
