Man, 22, Dies Mid-Flight On Plane Bound For LAX

An investigation is underway into what killed the 22-year-old man aboard the flight.

LOS ANGELES, CA — An investigation was underway Monday into the death of a 22-year-old man aboard a Southwest Airlines flight from Dallas to Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles County medical examiner's office identified the man as Rain McMillan Walmsey. His cause of death was deferred, and the case remained open Monday, according to the medical examiner.

Walmsey was aboard Southwest Airlines Flight 958 on Friday when he went into medical distress and became unresponsive while the plane was headed to Los Angeles International Airport, NBC Los Angeles reported, citing a law enforcement source.

CPR was administered during the flight, and paramedics met the plane when it arrived in Los Angeles. Walmsey could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene by firefighters, according to the station.

It was not immediately clear what caused the medical emergency.

Southwest Airlines confirmed to NBC Los Angeles that a "medical incident involving a customer" occurred aboard Flight 958 but did not provide additional details.
