Argument For Background Checks

Complicated and confusing laws are a thorn in every gun-owners side. Laws should be written in a way that is easy to understand. U.S. Citizens should be able to easily carry a gun in any of our wonderful states without having to check a myriad of federal, state, and local laws. That being said, some still believe that there should be some regulations.

Part of being responsible, law-abiding gun owners, is shielding the innocent from harm, whether it from physical hard or harm from those in power. While universal background checks is an awful phrase, some don’t totally understand why. Firearms are amongst the most effective and lethal weapons available. While they know that there is no way to guarantee that bad guys won’t get their hands on firearms, they just don’t want to be a participant, passive or direct, that aids them in their quest to obtaining a gun. In particular, some gun shop owners are in favor of UBC because this helps them make sure that they aren’t selling a firearm to a criminal. UBC’s also keep them from being held liable if the gun is used in a crime. Despite being in favor of background checks they are still opposed to registration. Registration leads to potential profiling, blacklisting tracking, and other invasions of privacy.

Argument Against Background Checks

When is comes to universal background checks the argument against them is very impassioned. The right to own and carry a firearm is a Constitutional right and as such should not be subject to the democratic process. To own a firearm is a freedom that includes the right to purchase, and background checks exclude a large subset from purchasing. There is no other fundamental Constitutional right that is subjected to UBCs.

Another major reason for opposition to UBCs is that gun control advocates are never truly satisfied. When they pass one form of gun control legislation, it leads to another, and another. They will never be done until they disarm the entire civilian population. Even when responsible, law-abiding gun owners follow all the rules, criminals will still disobey them and the antis will use this as an excuse to increase gun control. Overall, UBCs are a bad idea that leads to even more restrictions.
