Baby Girl Found In Dumpster Near School Dies, Investigation Underway

LOS ANGELES, CA — A homicide investigation is underway after the death of a baby girl who was found abandoned inside a dumpster in South Los Angeles late Monday, authorities said.

The infant was found around 10:30 p.m. near the 5200 block of Alba Street in the Central-Alameda neighborhood, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Los Angeles Fire Department personnel took the baby to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The girl was believed to be between 4 and 6 months old, Lt. Dave Hoskins told KTLA. Hoskins said that someone taking out trash discovered the baby wrapped in a blanket and called 911.

The dumpster was near the Pueblo del Rio housing complex and across the street from Holmes Avenue Elementary School, KTLA reported.

Police believe the child had been left there within the previous 24 hours, ABC 7 reported. Hoskins told the station that investigators had no suspects and few witnesses.

Detectives were canvassing the area for surveillance footage that could help identify who left the child in the dumpster, KTLA reported.

Authorities have not released the baby's identity or said how she died. The investigation remains ongoing.
