Brush Burns 20 Acres, Destroys Structures In Southeast LA County

LA HABRA HEIGHTS, CA — A fast-moving brush fire burned about 20 acres Monday afternoon in La Habra Heights, destroying at least three structures and prompting evacuations as flames threatened homes.

The Palos Fire was reported at about 2:23 p.m. near the 2400 block of Las Palomas Drive, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The fire — which broke out in the hills south of the San Gabriel Valley, near the Orange County line — was initially estimated at about 10 acres. By 3:19 p.m., Cal Fire reported the blaze had grown to 12 acres and said several structures were being impacted.

Officials later estimated the fire had burned about 20 acres. At least three structures were destroyed, including a large home.

Evacuation warnings were issued for zones LHH-772-A, LAC-E613-B, LAC-E615-B and LAC-E618-B, according to the county's Genasys Protect map.

Cal Fire officials said at 3:29 p.m. that evacuations were in effect for residents along Casalero Drive, Ardsheal Drive and West Skyline Drive.

At least six homes were evacuated, with displaced residents directed to Los Altos High School, 15325 Robles Ave. in Hacienda Heights, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The fire was burning in the area of West Skyline Drive and Church Hill Road, according to the La Habra Heights Fire Department.

No serious injuries were reported. One person was evaluated at the scene, and firefighters also worked to rescue a horse trapped at a property in the area.
