CA Bears Open Car Door To Reach Man Eating Corned Beef: Report

Video footage showed two hungry bears opening a man's car door as he ate lunch in his car in Sierra Madre on St. Patrick's Day.

PASADENA, CA — A man's St. Patrick's Day meal in his car was interrupted when two curious bears approached his vehicle and opened the door to get to his corned beef hash, KTLA reported.

The man was sitting in his car near Mountain Trail and Churchill Road in Sierra Madre when the hungry bears opened the door twice as he repeatedly shut it.

"Bears can open vehicle doors and they may cause damage trying to gain entrance if there are scented items inside," officials from the California Department of Parks and Recreation said in a statement.

The department offered some tips for safeguarding homes against visitations from bears:

  • Never feed wildlife, it encourages unnatural and harmful foraging behavior.
  • Store all trash in and properly close bear-resistant containers, preferably bear boxes.
  • Never leave groceries, animal feed, or anything scented in cars.
  • Keep barbecue grills clean and stored in a garage or shed when not in use.
  • Keep doors and windows closed and locked when no one is home.
  • Vegetable gardens, compost piles, orchards and chickens may attract bears.
  • Use electric fences to keep bears out where allowed.
  • Don't hang bird feeders.
