An artist losing her eyesight (Oscar-winner Juliette Binoche) and an unhoused circus performer (Denis Lavant) form an unexpected connection on the streets of Paris in this visually extravagant romance from writer-director Leos Carax (Holy Motors, 2012). Carax worked on a modest scale on his first two films, Boy Meets Girl (1984) and Mauvais Sang (1986), but The Lovers on the Bridge was an elaborate and infamously troubled project, plagued by production delays, budget overruns, and the necessity to recreate Paris’s Pont-Neuf on a massive set. The result received mixed reactions upon its release but has since been celebrated as one of the filmmaker’s most towering achievements, enhanced greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Jean-Yves Escoffier (Good... Will Hunting, 1997).
