In person: supervising sound editor Scott Hecker and re-recording mixers Scott Millan and Bob Beemer
Selected by the Sound Branch
Director Sam Mendes’s next film after his 1999 Best Picture winner American Beauty is a somber and gorgeously crafted gangster drama, based on a graphic novel series by Max Allan Collins and Richard Piers Rayner. Tom Hanks plays Michael Sullivan, a loving father and stoic enforcer for an Irish-American crime family (led by supporting actor nominee Paul Newman), who must flee with his young son.
Conrad L. Hall won a posthumous Oscar for his dark, moody cinematography, and the film was also nominated for its art direction (Dennis Gassner, Nancy Haigh), Thomas Newman’s moving score, and the atmospheric contributions of supervising sound editor Scott A. Hecker and sound mixers Scott Millan, Bob Beemer and John Patrick Pritchett.
Academy Museum film programming generously funded by the Richard Roth Foundation.
