In person: actor Park Hae-il
The second installment of the epic Yi Sun-sin trilogy by director Kim Han-min stars Park Hae-il as the 48-year-old Yi Sun-sin, an admiral of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910) venerated for seemingly miraculous victories over the Japanese naval forces during the Imjin War period. The film focuses on the 1592 Hansan Island battle against a fleet overseen by daimyo (feudal lord) Wakisaka Yasuharu, who plans to conquer the Joseon peninsula on a quest to devour the entire Ming Dynasty. Yi’s famously optimized Turtle battleship appears in grandiose, precisely executed glory under Yi’s orchestration. Spectacular visual compositions, complemented by remarkable visual effects and a magnificent score, come together to deliver one of most gratifying naval war scenes ever shown on the Korean big screen.
