Coco Queens, written by New York Times and USA Today bestselling author LaDarrion Williams and directed by Jessica E. Williams, will make its Los Angeles premiere at Outside In Theatre. Previews begin October 19, with opening night set for October 25. The limited engagement runs through November 17 at Outside In Theatre Artspace in Highland Park.
Set in a small Alabama town during the 1970s, Coco Queens follows four&nbsp;Black women whose lives have been forever shaped by love, loss,&nbsp;betrayal, and the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood. Inside Gloria's&nbsp;neighborhood beauty shop, a place where hair is done but souls are&nbsp;restored, generations of women gather for the annual Coco Queens&nbsp;Weekend, a sacred tradition of reflection, laughter, music, food, and healing&nbsp;passed down through the women who came before them.
&nbsp;As old wounds resurface and long-buried secrets come to light, the women&nbsp;are forced to confront colorism, ambition, motherhood, grief, and the cost of&nbsp;chasing dreams in a world determined to divide them. The signing accompanies a screening of <a href="https://www.academymuseum.org/programs/detail/they-live-by-night-with-a-s-hamrah-and-nathan-gelgud-019fce87-a827-bf83-b8a9-0fc6ac7bc84d" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">They Live by Night</a> (1948) with both authors in person. Screening requires a separate ticket.

Gelgud has drawn the Reel Politik comic strip since 2024. A former projectionist, video store clerk, and movie critic, he creates nonfiction comics about the arts for the New York Times and Hyperallergic and conducts comics-making workshops in Los Angeles.
Hamrah is the film critic for n+1... magazine and the author of The Earth Dies Streaming, Last Week in End Times Cinema, and Algorithm of the Night. He is a member of the National Society of Film Critics and lives in New York.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Critiques and Comics: Book Signing with Nathan Gelgud and A. S. Hamrah

In person: cartoonist Nathan Gelgud and critic A. S. HamrahBefore Terrence Malick’s Badlands (1973), before Arthur Penn’s Bonnie and Clyde (1967), there was Nicholas Ray’s They Live by Night (1948), a book-to-screen adaptation about young lovers on the run. After busting out of prison, Bowie (Farley Granger) hides out at a filling station owned by a dad with alcoholism and his daughter Keechie (Cathy O’Donnell) and starts knocking off banks with his fellow escapees. After a spending spree leaves Bowie injured and vulnerable to the law, Keechie falls for him, and the couple sets off an ill-fated journey, hopeful for a new life.
In Ray’s remarkable debut feature, classic noir elements blend effortlessly with melodrama to create something entirely new, making They Live by Night a... standout of the period, realized with lived-in dialogue beautifully adapted from Edward Anderson’s source material and shot primarily on location in greater Los Angeles. The film is notable too for its innovative camera techniques and tracking shots, especially in the driving sequences. This warm-up for Rebel Without a Cause (1955) finds Ray arriving on the scene fully formed with a confident and inimitable style. &nbsp;
A favorite of cartoonist Nathan Gelgud and critic A. S. Hamrah, the screening is followed by a conversation about Ray and his oft-overlooked influence on American filmmaking. In a separately ticketed event before the film, Gelgud and Hamrah sign copies of their newest books.

October 28th - November 20th, Reception Nov 7, 5-8Printed, Dyed and Stitched is an exhibit of all new quilts by Barbara Danzi, created with silk screens and other printing tools and techniques and thickened fiber-reactive dyes. After printing and dyeing the fabric, it's layered and stitched with quilted lines that add additional meaning or context to the dyed compositions. These quilts hang on the wall.Fiber Artist Talk 11/8 3pm - Barbara Danzi will discuss her inspiration and process for creating these colorful whole cloth quilts, and the creative stretch she has taken from her typical technique of improvisational piecing of hand-cut solid-colored fabric.Reception 11/7 5-8These quilts have an environmental theme. Resilience is a quilt with stitched green vines against a background of reds and oranges, showing that we can be resilient and grow through the situations we are in. The quilts Reef and Abyss present underwater worlds. Leafy Greens, Secret Garden and Flower Bed explore plant life. Break Glass can be interpreted as encouragement to go and break that glass ceiling, or a warning that we're in an emergency and should break the glass and pull the alarm.The patterns which the artist has created through printing and dyeing, and the quilting stitches with colored threads that complete the quilts give the viewer many details to study and enjoy.This exhibit is part of Handwork 2026 with Craft in America.FreePresented by Barbara Danzi Fine Art Quilts.
