Chunk Of Ice Falls From Sky And Through LA County Resident's Roof

A county official is calling for a federal investigation into the source of the dirty, foul-smelling chunk of ice.

A Los Angeles County supervisor is calling for a federal investigation after a large chunk of ice fell from the sky and through the roof of a Whittier home on Friday.

The incident occurred at around 11:15 a.m. Friday when the block of dirty, foul-smelling ice fell through the roof of the backyard dwelling. The resident told NBC Los Angeles it sounded like an explosion, the station reported.

The piece of ice left a hole in the roof.

On Tuesday, Supervisor Janice Hahn wrote a letter to the Federal Aviation Administration, calling for a thorough and timely investigation into the source of the object.

"We are lucky that Yuder was not in his living room when this block of ice crashed through his ceiling," Hahn said in a statement. "I am bringing this incident to the attention of the FAA because they need to investigate what happened and take whatever steps necessary to prevent it from happening again."

The resident looked at flight tracking data and surprised that an aircraft was operating directly overhead at the time of the incident, according to Hahn.

An NBC Los Angeles' meteorologist who is also a licensed pilot, said debris falling from aircraft can sometimes involve frozen waste or water. The source of such ice could be the aircraft's sinks.
