Diver Off San Pedro Coast Dies

A diver who became unresponsive while under water off the San Pedro coast has died despite efforts to save her in a hyperbaric chamber.

SAN PEDRO, CA — Authorities Monday identified a 57-year-old diver who died despite efforts to save her life in a hyperbaric chamber at Santa Catalina Island.

Gina Castillo died at the Catalina facility about 12:30 p.m. Saturday, said coroner's Assistant Chief Ed Winter.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, Castillo was with another diver in the ocean in San Pedro when she became unresponsive while underwater on Saturday morning.

She was pulled from the water, and was taken on a 45-foot Coast Guard boat to the hyperbaric chamber on Catalina Island.
