Dodgers’ Minor League Team Has NSFW Rebranding SNAFU

Apparently, the Spanish word for jackets has multiple meanings.

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes chose the nickname Chaquetas for Minor League Baseball’s Copa de la Diversión series, and the rebranding went south almost as soon as it was announced, The Los Angeles Times reported Friday.

Spanish for jackets, Chaquetas is also slang for masturbation, something the Dodgers’ single-A minor league affiliate discovered after the strange reaction their announcement triggered on social media, according to the Times.

“We went live at 10 o’clock and we’re so excited,” Grant Riddle, Quakes executive vice president and general manager told The Times Friday. “You know, we’ve been working for this for two years, gone through this extensive process, all of that. And then we started to get some comments that we didn’t understand.”

The club had played in the series as the Temblores in the past.

“We had fun with that but kind of wanted to reengage and reenergize our fan base,” Riddle told The Times. “We’ve been looking for something, maybe a bit more unique to activate our local Latino fan base. And we’ve been working on it for a couple of years honestly.”

And so the team is sticking with the moniker, and they plan to wear the Chaquetas uniform with pride on April 13, May 16 and July 19.
