LOS ANGELES, CA – Los Angeles firefighters battled a fire Downtown early Tuesday morning in a building that is home to several businesses.

Just before 4 a.m. Tuesday, the L.A. City Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 803 W. Chavez Ave and found a row of one story commercial units that were on fire, officials said in a news release on the department's website.

"With multiple units at risk, firefighters immediately initiated aggressive, simultaneous firefighting operations," LAFD spokesperson Margaret Stewart said in the news release. "Engine companies conducted fire attack while truck companies ascended to the roof for vertical ventilation."

The building, which was constructed in 1921, is 5,150 square feet and houses four businesses, officials said. The building also had a large common attic space that provided fire crews with an unimpeded path across the structure.

More than 80 firefighters were on scene and were able to contain the fire to a single unit, "Red Wing Shoes." Adjacent businesses suffered limited water and smoke damage, officials said.
