Firefighters In Montebello Inch Toward Containment Of Brush Fire

MONTEBELLO, CA -- The battle continued Sunday as firefighters worked to clear vegetation around a fire that burned about 21 acres in the El Prado flood control basin in Montebello, authorities said.

The fire in heavy brush was reported at 11:27 a.m. Saturday along San Gabriel Boulevard nerare the Rio Honso, south of the Pomona (60) Freeway, the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

As of 2 p.m., containment was still estimated at 75 percent, Dispatch Supervisor Art Marrujo said.

About 200 firefighters and several water-dropping helicopters were at the scene at the height of the firefight.

But at mid-afternoon, between 60 - 75 firefighters at the scene, putting out hot spots and cleaning up, Marrujo said.

Unlike Saturday, no water-dropping helicopters were being used Sunday, he added.

No structures were threatened, and no injuries were reported, Marrujo said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation, he said.
