Former Cedars-Sinai Pediatrician Charged With Child Pornography

LOS ANGELES, CA —A recently fired Cedars-Sinai pediatrician was barred from practicing medicine Friday by the state medical board a day after he was charged with possession of hundreds of image of child pornography.

Gary David Goulin, 60, pleaded not guilty to the charge Thursday, but Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Victoria Wilson also barred him from practicing medicine as a condition of his bail. She also ordered home to to have any unsupervised time with children while the case against him is pending.

His former employer was quick to denounce him. Cedars-Sinai announced that it "took immediate action and terminated Dr. Goulin's employment and his employee access to Cedars- Sinai facilities" after being notified Nov. 5 by the Los Angeles Police Department about his arrest and the charges against him, hospital officials said in a written statement.

"We are appalled and disgusted by Dr. Goulin's alleged crimes," Cedars-Sinai said. "Cedars-Sinai remains committed to ensuring the integrity of our employees and the organization."

Goulin's attorney, Mark Werksman, said the charges have nothing to do with his client's career.

"He spent a lifetime providing quality care to his patients and dedicating himself to his practice," Werksman said. "These charges have nothing to do with his patients or his medical practice or the hospital where he worked. We're going to deal with the case in court."

Goulin was arrested Nov. 4 by the Los Angeles Police Department's Juvenile Division and released later that day on $200,000 bond, jail records show.

Goulin was charged the next day with one felony count of possession of more than 600 images of child or youth pornography including "10 or more images of a prepubescent minor or a minor who was under 12 years of age," and four misdemeanor counts of sexual exploitation of a child -- with the criminal complaint alleging that he "did unlawfully and knowingly develop, duplicate, print and exchange a representation of information, data and image that contained and incorporated in any manner a film and filmstrip, that depicts a person under the age of 18 years engaged in an act of sexual conduct."

A date is scheduled to be set March 2 for a hearing to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to require Goulin to stand trial.
