Government-Owned Vehicle Collisions Increasing Annually in the City of Los Angeles
Expect hundreds, potentially over a thousand, accidents involving various LA city vehicles annually, with the LAPD being a large component.
Los Angeles, California - /LaGuardia Media and Public Relations/ - Every year in Los Angeles, accidents involving county, city and emergency vehicles are increasing. LAPD alone averages over 500 collisions annually, with officers partly at fault in nearly half, and saw a record number of pursuits (1116) in 2024, causing civilian injuries and deaths. Other departments like LAFD and LADWP contribute significantly to this total, as well.
These reports rival national numbers. In 2023, 198 people died in crashes involving emergency vehicles. More than half of these deaths were occupants of non-emergency vehicles (57%). Deaths among pedestrians accounted for 23% of the total, while emergency vehicle drivers represented 11%, and emergency vehicle passengers accounted for about 7% of the deaths. The majority of these deaths (68%) occurred in multi-vehicle crashes. Crashes involving police vehicles accounted for the most deaths (134), followed by ambulances and fire trucks, with each experiencing 32 deaths.
These numbers have significantly increased in recent years and are projected to continue increasing, presenting a growing threat to the country, the city and the safety of its residents.

The best course of action is always to consult an experienced personal injury attorney to help you weigh your options. Litigation against government entities can be overwhelming. It is of the utmost importance that you have someone who will help you get the relief and compensation you deserve.
What about my insurance? What if they don’t pay my claim? Insurance companies have a duty to act in good faith. If they do not do so, a qualified attorney can help to hold them to task. It doesn’t matter if the car accident is with a government vehicle or not.
