HazMat Team Called To LA Live For Chemical Spill

A drum filled with an unknown chemical emitted fumes, causing an employee in the LA Live area to be sick Friday.

LOS ANGELES, CA — A hazardous materials team is headed to the LA Live area in Downtown Los Angeles where a 55-gallon drum filled with an unknown chemical emitted fumes that caused an evacuation and one hospitalization.

The hazmat team was called to a parking structure 1168 LA Live Way just before noon Friday, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Margaret Stewart. The drum is located near the building's HVAC units, prompting firefighters to turn them off.

More than 10 employees of LA Live were evaluated for illness by paramedics, according to the LAFD. Paramedics evaluated 33 employees of JW Marriott hotel. One woman transported to a hospital and one man was treated at the scene.

"The units on scene requested LAFD HazMat squad and they are preparing to make entry in an attempt to identify the product in question," she said. "The adult male patient was treated on scene and declined ambulance transport. There are no other patients."
