LOS ANGELES, CA — The House Ethics Committee on Monday publicly confirmed it is reviewing allegations that Rep. Jimmy Gomez, D-Los Angeles, may have engaged in sexual misconduct, including alleged "inappropriate sexual contact with a House staffer."

The committee said it is examining whether the alleged conduct violated the House Code of Official Conduct or another applicable standard. The committee cautioned that its decision to investigate does not mean a violation occurred and said it would not comment further except in accordance with its rules.

The announcement is the committee's first public confirmation of an investigation that CNN reported on June 2. At the time, CNN cited three unnamed sources familiar with the matter.

CNN reported that committee staff began looking into the matter after following up on a New York Post story alleging Gomez was seen kissing a congressional aide who worked for another member of Congress outside a party in 2023. A spokesperson for Gomez denied that account when the Post initially reported it.

Investigators subsequently learned of additional sexual misconduct allegations involving Gomez, CNN reported. The Ethics Committee's Monday statement did not provide further details about the allegations under review.

In a statement provided to CNN in June, Gomez acknowledged making personal mistakes outside his marriage that caused pain to his wife and family. He maintained that his conduct was consensual and did not violate the law or House ethics rules.

"I take full responsibility and have committed myself to working through the pain privately with my wife and family," Gomez said.

He also said he had sought professional assistance to repair his family relationships and would cooperate with an Ethics Committee inquiry.

Gomez represents California's 34th Congressional District, which includes areas around downtown Los Angeles, the Eastside and Northeast Los Angeles.
