LAPD Central Station Evacuated, 1 Hospitalized In Hazmat Incident

A Los Angeles Police Department Employee was hospitalized Wednesday after opening an envelope containing an unknown substance.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Part of the Los Angeles Police Department's Central Station was evacuated Wednesday morning, and one employee was hospitalized after opening an envelope containing an unknown substance.

Out of precaution, the station's entire third floor has been evacuated, and the Los Angeles fire Department's hazardous materials team will conduct a sweep of the building.

"An employee opened up an envelope containing an unknown substance," said LAPD Officer Tony Im.

The employee was taken to a nearby hospital in unknown condition, added Im.

The incident was reported at about 7:40 a.m. at the facility in the 200 block of East Sixth Street, according to the LAPD. As of 9:15 a.m., the building had not yet been cleared.

It was not immediately clear what substance was in the envelope.
