'Let's Buy CA': Petition For Danes To Acquire The Golden State Picks Up Momentum Again

The satirical—or not so satirical—petition has garnered tens of thousands of new signatures as Trump ramped up threats to seize Greenland.

A tongue-and-cheek petition for Danish people to buy California has gained new momentum in recent days amid President Donald Trump's rhetoric around a potential Greenland takeover.

"Los Angeles? More like Løs Ångeles," the petition muses.

The online petition has collected more than 287,050 signatures from the Scandinavian country Denmark, which has a population of nearly 6 million people.

The campaign to buy the nation's most prosperous and populous state began as a cheeky response to Trump's remarks about the U.S. acquiring Greenland from Denmark early last year.

But the president's recent threats to seize Greenland, and potentially by force, has earned the petition a slew of new signatures in recent days. Greenland is a mostly autonomous territory of Denmark, a longtime ally of the U.S.

Last week, tensions grew overseas as European nations sent a small number of troops to Greenland. Meanwhile, Greenland's prime minister told residents to prepare for a potential invasion.

So, it appears that Greenlanders and Danes are turning back to last year's satirical—or perhaps not so satirical anymore—petition from last year.

"Have you ever looked at a map and thought, 'You know what Denmark needs? More sunshine, palm trees, and roller skates.' Well, we have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to make that dream a reality," the campaign website reads. "Let's buy California from Donald Trump!"

The petition says its crowdfunding goal is $1 trillion — "give or take a few billion."

Petitioners are pitching five major incentives to Danes — Sunshine galore, tech dominance, avocado toast forever, to protect the free world and Disneyland, which it proposes to rename Hans Christian Andersenland.

"Trump isn’t exactly California’s biggest fan. He’s called it 'the most ruined state in the Union' and has feuded with its leaders for years. We’re pretty sure he’d be willing to part with it for the right price."
