Major 405 Freeway Closures Return This Week, Last Through Monday

LOS ANGELES, CA — Traffic will once again be impacted on the 405 Freeway and nearby roads beginning Friday when construction will shut down several lanes and ramps of the interstate in the Sepulveda Pass and San Fernando Valley for the entire weekend.

Additional closures are planned overnight beginning Monday, Sept. 28.

Here's a look at the weekend-long closures, planned for 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2 through 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 5:

• The southbound 405 will be reduced to three lanes between Ventura Boulevard and Mulholland Drive
• The Ventura Boulevard on-ramp to the southbound 405 will be closed
• The southbound 405 off-ramp to Valley Vista Boulevard/Sepulveda Boulevard will be closed
• The Valley Vista Boulevard/Sepulveda Boulevard on-ramp to the southbound 405 will be closed
• The northbound 405 off-ramp to Getty Center Drive will be closed

Lanes will be open as normal on the northbound freeway. All connectors between the 101 and 405 freeways are expected to remain open.

Other Closures Planned

Additional closures are also planned overnight earlier in the week, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Friday morning.

• Up to four northbound lanes of the 405 will be closed between Wilshire Boulevard and Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive.
• Up to four southbound lanes will be closed between the 101 Freeway and Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive.
• The northbound Getty Center Drive on- and off-ramps and the northbound Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive off-ramp will also be closed.
• On the southbound side, the Sepulveda Boulevard and Ventura Boulevard on- and off-ramps will be closed, along with the northbound and southbound 101 Freeway connectors to the southbound 405.

Construction has been underway on the 405 Freeway in and near the Sepulveda Pass since June 2025 as part of the I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project, a $143.7 million project to improve safety and mobility along the freeway and extend the life of its pavement, according to Caltrans.

Many of the associated road closures occur overnight. But big traffic headaches have come courtesy of what Caltrans calls Extended Weekend Closures — that's when crews shut down lanes and/or ramps on Friday night and keep them closed until Monday morning.

Those weekend-long closures will happen at a pace of about every other week — or twice a month.

Caltrans does not have a finalized schedule for each weekend-long closure, but said there will be about 25 total weekend-long closures.
