LOS ANGELES, CA — Overnight freeway closures are expected to jam up traffic near Downtown and East of Los Angeles, and drivers are advised to make alternate travel plans, according to Caltrans.

Both the (Harbor) 110 Freeway and the Santa Monica (10) Freeway will undergo closures for Caltrans projects starting Friday.

Starting at 11 p.m. Friday night, Caltrans will close three lanes on the southbound 110 Freeway between the Santa Monica (10) Freeway and Exposition Boulevard for demolition work on an out-of-service pedestrian bridge. Additionally, all southbound freeway on-ramps from the connector ramps from the 10 Freeway will be closed for the work.

They'll be followed by another overnight closure Saturday. This time, both sides of the freeway will shut down, causing major delays in the area.

Starting at 11 p.m. Saturday all southbound lanes of the 110 Freeway will shut down between the 10 Freeway and Exposition Boulevard along with all northbound lanes between Adams and Washington boulevards. The freeway is slated to reopen at 8 a.m. Sunday.

This full-freeway closure will force drivers on the northbound Express Lanes to exit early. However, the Southbound Express Lanes will be accessible at the 28th Street on-ramp, the 39th Street on-ramp or at Florence Avenue.

The southbound off-ramp at Adams Boulevard will be closed all weekend until 8 p.m. Sunday.

Drivers should expect to be diverted at the 10 Freeway interchange and will be able to get back on the freeway at Exposition or Martin Luther King Jr. boulevards, making side streets in the area a slog as well.

On the northbound side, drivers will have to exit Adams and get back on the freeway at

Northbound motorists will be forced off the freeway at Adams and access the 10 Freeway via Hoover Street.

The closures will allow crews to demolish the defunct pedestrian bridge over the 110 Freeway at 21st Street.

Motorists are also being advised to avoid the nearby I-10 from the San Gabriel (605) Freeway to the Santa Anita busway from 7:00 p.m. Friday to 10:00 a.m Saturday, according to Caltrans. The closure will affect both east and westbound sides of the freeway.

"Motorists should expect delays and are strongly advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes," Caltrans warned.

The work on I-10 is part of a $7 million project to upgrade the median barrier height and replace adjacent pavement on a 9-mile stretch of highway between the city of Alhambra and the city of El Monte. The project is estimated to be completed by Fall of 2025.

Additionally, motorists can check traffic conditions before they leave by visiting the Caltrans Quickmap (quickmap.dot.ca.gov).
