Major SGV Freeway Will Shut Down This Weekend

Construction will shut down an entire portion of the freeway over the weekend. Here's how to avoid the worst of the traffic impacts.

The closures are part of the 57/60 Confluence Chokepoint Relief Project, which involves reconfiguring ramps and interchanges and adding mainline and bypass lanes to reduce weaving.

DIAMOND BAR, CA — Traffic is expected to be impacted this weekend when construction shuts down parts of the 60 Freeway in the San Gabriel Valley.

Parts of the freeway will be fully shut down overnight between Lemon Avenue/Brea Canyon Road and Diamond Bar Boulevard. Additionally, several ramps will be closed in that area, according to the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments.

The closures are part of the 57/60 Confluence Chokepoint Relief Project, which involves reconfiguring ramps and interchanges and adding mainline and bypass lanes to reduce weaving. Officials say the area where the two highways merge suffers from major bottleneck conditions that contribute to severe congestion and forced lane changes that have resulted in fatal collisions.

Motorists will be detoured off the freeway both nights. Signs will indicate the direction of the detour.

As of 2021, the interchange was considered the sixth most-congested freeway segment in the country and the third worst in the state, according to the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Around 100 million drivers travel through the interchange each year.

The segment is also considered the second-highest location for truck accidents in the Southland because of lane mergers and motorists who weave dangerously in and out of traffic, the California Highway Patrol said at that time. Truck-related accidents occur at a 50 percent higher rate in the interchange than the state average.
