Man Killed In Apparent Gang Shooting Downtown L.A.
Around the same time, a dog was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer.

LOS ANGELES, CA - A man was killed in an apparent gang-related shooting in downtown Los Angeles Friday about the same time and in the same general area where a dog was fatally shot by an off-duty Los Angeles police officer, authorities said.
Paramedics sent about 11:40 a.m. to the 800 block of East Fifth Street pronounced a man dead at the scene, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. His name was withheld pending notification of kin.
According to the preliminary investigation, the man, about 40, was approached by one or more suspects who shot him and fled in a vehicle, the Los Angeles Police Department reported.

About 11:30 a.m., an off-duty LAPD officer working security at a movie set at Fourth and Main streets got into an argument with a man, and an "aggressive dog" approached the officer, LAPD Officer Irma Mota said.
The officer shot the animal, which died at the scene, Mota said.

The officer suffered minor injuries, and the man with whom the officer was arguing was detained for questioning.
It was not immediately known if the fatally wounded animal belonged to the man.
