Mayor Bass Questions LAPD Training After 2 Deaths In Police Encounters: Report
Mayor Karen Bass questioned whether officers are adequately trained to handle mental health crises following the release of graphic footage.
LOS ANGELES, CA — Graphic video showing the deaths of two men during separate Los Angeles Police Department encounters has prompted questions about the department's handling of apparent mental health crises, The New York Times reported Wednesday.
Mayor Karen Bass told the newspaper she questioned whether current police training was adequate.
Jose Carlos Hoyos-Munoz, 58, died July 15 after detention officers restrained him at a San Fernando Valley jail, while Alejandro Luis Garcia, 33, was fatally shot by police July 29 after officers said he was swinging an aluminum baseball bat at pedestrians and vehicles, according to the Times. Both cases remain under investigation.
