Meet an “Amazing” With Many Astonishing “Firsts” to Her Name

Patricia Bath is the patent holder of the highly valued Laserphaco Probe, which greatly advanced cataract eye surgery.

Patricia Bath, at 76, is not only the proud author of a children’s picture book cited by both the National Science Teachers Association and the Chicago Public Library as one of the best children’s books of the year (The Doctor with an Eye for Eyes), but is the holder of four (count them – four!) patents for medical purposes.

They include the highly valued Laserphaco Probe, which greatly advanced cataract eye surgery. Not only that, but Patricia, an ophthalmologist, was the first African-American resident in ophthalmology at New York University, and the first African-American woman to be a staff surgeon at the UCLA Medical Center. And that’s just a few of her many accomplishments. Whew! Way to go, Patricia!
