Meet An “Amazing” Who Ice-Climbs For The Benefit Of Others
Kris Machnick, at 80, is climbing ice mountains for the joy of it – and to raise money for neurodegenerative diseases research.

Kris Machnick, at 80, is climbing ice mountains for the joy of it – and to put a much needed spotlight on neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Her project, “8 for 80,” consists of her climbing 8 mountains by 80 (she started the project when she turned 79) as a way to raise $100,000 to help support research for those diseases.
Kris only started indoor gym climbing once she retired from her job at 62 as Director of Finance for the City and Public Utilities in Santa Clara, California. She started outdoor climbing at 64, and became totally entranced with ice climbing soon after. Witnessing friends and loved ones suffer from neurodegenerative diseases is what inspired Kris to create “8 for 80.” Despite injuring her knee mid-way through “8 for 80,” she persevered. She's now looking forward to an “8 for 80 Encore” to continue her fundraising. Way to go, Kris!
