Officer Killed In 605 Freeway Crash

Detective Alexis Gonzalez was killed shortly before midnight on an onramp to the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway​ late Sunday night.

NORWALK, CA — An off-duty South Gate police detective died in an on-ramp crash on the San Gabriel River (605) Freeway late Sunday night.

Detective Alexis Gonzalez was a five-year veteran of the police department. He died at Saint Francis Medical Center shortly after crashing on the Firestone Boulevard on-ramp to the San 605 Freeway in Norwalk shortly before Midnight Sunday.

"Detective Gonzalez is survived by his parents and two brothers," the South Gate Police Department said on Instagram. "We ask that you keep the Gonzalez family and our department in your prayers. We thank all of our law enforcement partners for their support during this difficult time."

The California Highway Patrol did not say what led up to the crash. The circumstances of the crash remain under investigation. A SigAlert was issued at 11:50 p.m. shutting down the on-ramp, which was reopened about 1:30 a.m., the CHP reported.
