Pedestrian Struck At Vigil For Biker Killed At Same Intersection

The intersection of Manchester and Normandie is closed after a pedestrian was struck during a vigil for a cyclist killed there Tuesday.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Police in Los Angeles shut down the busy intersection of Manchester and Normandie avenues, where a pedestrian was struck in a hit and run during a vigil for a cyclist who was struck and killed in a hit and run at the same intersection on Tuesday.

The driver of a tan-colored Honda Accord drove through the vigil at the intersection of Manchester and Normandie avenues shortly after 1 p.m., Los Angeles police Officer Tony Im said.

Video from the scene shows the sedan striking the pedestrian, who is tossed into the air and lands on the pavement. He then gets up and hops on one foot to the sidewalk, where he collapses to the ground. His condition was not immediately available.

Some of the dozens of bicyclists taking part in the vigil immediately began following the motorist, while some tried running after the driver on foot. The sedan, however, disappeared in the distance.

Due to the vigil, Los Angeles police were already on the scene when the pedestrian was struck.

Some rocks and bottles were thrown toward responding officers and a patrol vehicle, but no officers were injured and no arrests were made, Im said. Police swarmed and cleared the intersection, but not before a department SUV had its rear window smashed. The SUV's tires had been flattened by the time it was towed from the scene, according to a news photographer at the location.

Im said the vigil was being held at the intersection in memory of a bicyclist who was struck by a hit-and-run motorist around 1 p.m. Tuesday. The bicyclist died at a hospital, he said.

According to the LAPD's South Traffic Division, the bicyclist killed Tuesday was a man in his early 20s, who was struck by a white Porsche Cayenne SUV. The victim was identified in news reports as 22-year-old Frederick Frazier.

The driver of the SUV that hit the young man was heading east on Manchester when the collision occurred. The driver then headed south on Budlong Avenue before traveling west. It was last seen westbound near La Salle Avenue Elementary School, police said.
