🌱 RIP Officer Houston Tipping + Cinco Puntos Memorial Traffic Circle

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Los Angeles.

(Patch Media)

Hello there, Los Angeles; today is World Parrot Day, which was first organized by the World Parrot Trust in 2004! I'm here in your inbox per usual to tell you everything you need to know about what's going on around town. Keep scrolling for the scoop.

A five-year LAPD veteran lost his life in a training accident. Also, why does Kevin De Leon want to build a traffic circle at the Cinco Puntos Memorial? Finally, a fight led to gunfire across the street from a bar.

First, today's weather:

Plenty of sunshine. High: 78 Low: 59.

Poll: I asked, "who should be the next Los Angeles mayor?"
As of today, Rick Caruso leads the pack with 50.3% of your votes, and Karen Bass is in second place with 28.7%. Kevin De Leon has 9.4%, Gina Viola 5%, and Ramit Varma 0.6%. The rest of the votes were made up, among other names, of "undecided" and candidates who have since dropped out.

Here are the top five stories in Los Angeles today:

  1. LAPD Officer Houston Tipping died on Sunday, three days after being injured during a training accident. "Officer Houston Tipping, a bike instructor, was grappling with another officer in a training exercise at the Elysian Park Academy when he fell and 'suffered a catastrophic spinal cord injury'." He was a five-year veteran of the LAPD. (KTLA, LA County Sheriffs)
  2. On Sunday and Monday, volunteers stood guard in 15-minute shifts at the Cinco Puntos Memorial. This Boyle Heights landmark honors fallen Mexican-American veterans. However, it's also where Kevin De Leon wants to build a Traffic Circle that would include the memorial. Protesters were on hand Monday morning to make their voices heard. (NBC)
  3. There was a Saturday night shooting across the street "from Fin & Feathers on the corner of Del Rey and Washington Boulevard." An altercation got physical and resulted in gunshots. The shooting victims were taken to the hospital. (Fox)
  4. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón charged the man who allegedly shot at LAPD officers on Monday. He "faces two counts each of willful, deliberate and premeditated attempted murder of a peace officer in performance of their duties and assault with a semi-automatic firearm on a peace officer in performance of their duties, as well as one count of carrying an unregistered firearm in public." Arraignment will take place on June 9. (LADA)
  5. A car chase ended at Eastern Avenue and Dozier Street on Sunday evening. A driver in a red SUV led the chase. The California Highway Patrol made the arrest. (NBC)
