11 SoCal Cities Beat Heat Records: List
Soaring temperatures smashed records all over Southern California, but relief is on the way this weekend.
LOS ANGELES, CA — A three-day heatwave has shattered several early April temperature records in Southern California, the National Weather Service Los Angeles tweeted Thursday:
- Los Angeles International Airport was 95 degrees, beating its record of 93 degrees in 1989.
- Santa Barbara was 92 degrees, inching out its record of 91 degrees in 1989.
- Oxnard registered at 99 degrees, beating its 1989 record of 92 degrees.
- Camarillo’s 98 degrees beat out its 1989 record of 92 degrees.
- Long Beach soared past its 1989 record of 93 degrees, registering at 100 degrees.
- Anaheim beat its 2005 record of 91 degrees at 96 degrees.
- John Wayne Airport recorded 103 degrees, far exceeding its 2010 record of 85.
- Fullerton temperatures reached 101 degrees, breaking a 2014 record by 11 degrees.
- Ontario posted temperatures of 96 degrees, beating the 2014 high by 4 degrees.
- Chino posted temperatures of 99 degrees, beating its 2014 record by 7 degrees.
California has been baking under an official heat advisory since Wednesday, when temperatures soared to the 80s even along northern coastal cities like San Francisco. The record-setting heat has been paired with hot, gusty Santa Ana winds. Wind advisories were issued in parts of Los Angeles, Ventura, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Though gusts generally remained below 40 miles an hour, winds of 65 miles an hour were recorded at the Magic Mountain Truck Trail near Santa Clarita, KTLA reported.
But there’s relief in sight as cooler weather approaches. Most of the wind advisories expired Thursday, and now Los Angeles is recording average winds of about 5 miles an hour, according to the National Weather Service. Heat advisories across Southern California expire at 6 p.m. Friday, giving way to more seasonally appropriate temperatures. However, strong winds are still possible throughout the weekend.
