Trump Threatens To Sue Grammys Host Over Epstein Island Joke

It's the latest example of Trump threatening those who criticize or mock him.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Trevor Noah took aim at President Donald Trump during his hosting gig at the Grammy Awards Sunday night. One joke, in particular, got under the president's skin, prompting him to threaten to sue the comedian.

Noah made the remark after Billie Eilish won song of the year.

“Wow. That is a Grammy that every artist wants," Noah said, "almost as much as Trump wants Greenland. Which makes sense. I mean, because Epstein’s island is gone, he needs a new island to hang out with Bill Clinton.”

Shortly after the show, Trump responded in a Truth Social post, saying the Grammys were "virtually unwatchable."

"Noah said, INCORRECTLY about me, that Donald Trump and Bill Clinton spent time on Epstein Island. WRONG!!! I can’t speak for Bill, but I have never been to Epstein Island, nor anywhere close, and until tonight’s false and defamatory statement, have never been accused of being there, not even by the Fake News Media. Noah, a total loser, better get his facts straight, and get them straight fast. It looks like I’ll be sending my lawyers to sue this poor, pathetic, talentless, dope of an M.C., and suing him for plenty$," Trump wrote at 1 a.m. ET.

The president later made another post about the matter Monday morning, doubling down on his insistence that he was not friendly with Jeffrey Epstein. He also wrote that he would sue some unnamed members of what he termed the "Radical Left."

'Unlike so many people that like to 'talk' trash, I never went to the infested Epstein island but, almost all of these Crooked Democrats, and their Donors, did," Trump wrote.

Trump and Epstein had been close friends until the 2000s. Trump has repeatedly downplayed his relationship with Epstein and denied any wrongdoing in connection to the sex offender, the New York Times reported.

Former President Bill Clinton and former secretary of state Hillary Clinton were both subpoenaed in August by the House Oversight Committee as part of its investigation into Epstein. On Monday, the Republican chair of the committee rejected an offer from the former president to conduct a transcribed interview as part of the probe.

Trump and his administration officials have pushed to use the might of the federal government to silence critics.

Last week, federal agents arrested journalist Don Lemon in connection with coverage of an anti-immigration enforcement protest that disrupted a service at a Minnesota church and increased tensions between residents and federal officials.

In the fall, Disney briefly suspended production of "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" following the host's comments about Trump. Trump had suggested federal regulators should revoke broadcast licenses over late-night hosts who speak negatively about him, a view that the Federal Communications Commission chair seemed to support.

Two months earlier, CBS canceled "The Late Show" two days after host Stephen Colbert spoke out against the network's parent company settling a lawsuit filed by Trump over a “60 Minutes” story.

That case played out during Paramount Global's sale to Skydance Media, which required approval from the FCC.

In 2013, Trump sued Bill Maher after the comedian said he would donate to charity if Trump could provide a birth certificate proving that his father was not an orangutan. He later withdrew the lawsuit, Reuters reported.

Maher's offer was similar to one Trump made to then-President Barack Obama, whom Trump falsely claimed was born in Kenya.
