Universe Multicultural Film Festival 2026: Successful Completion in Hollywood

The Universe Multicultural Film Festival (UMFF) has been a globally recognized platform for cultural advocacy through the cinema arts for 14 years. The festival is dedicated to providing equal representation and opportunities for filmmakers, writers, producers, actors, and storytellers alike from diverse cultural backgrounds. Through UMFF, international and multicultural voices are invited to showcase their work, connect with industry professionals, and celebrate the power of storytelling through film.

UMFF hosts a three-day event that many attendees affectionately refer to as “The West Coast Cannes.” Throughout the festival, guests can enjoy a diverse lineup of film screenings, red carpet events, industry panels, networking opportunities, cultural performances, fashion showcases, and award presentations. By bringing together creative professionals from a wide range of backgrounds, UMFF continues to foster meaningful connections and highlight stories that reflect the richness of cultures across the globe.

UMFF welcomes people of all backgrounds and offers a space to open the door to a variety of genre screenings. UMFF award-winning alums are also encouraged to return, participate, and submit their latest projects.

One of the 2026 hosts for UMFF was Oscar Winner, Bran Ferren, who was honored with UMFF’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Ferren’s career spans filmmaking, live entertainment, technology, and design. He previously served as President of Research & Development for The Walt Disney Company and President of Creative Technology for Walt Disney Imagineering, where he helped develop attractions including Test Track and The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. An Academy Award recipient for Scientific and Technical Achievement, he has contributed to numerous projects, including Altered States, Little Shop of Horrors, Cats, and Evita, and has collaborated with artists such as David Bowie and Paul McCartney.

A returning UMFF filmmaker, Samuel Lee Taylor, received the Best Screenplay Award at the 2026 UMFF Reception on day 2 for his screenplay, “At the Mercy of Faith.” Inspired by Taylor's personal experience of losing his job and struggling with anger and disappointment toward God, the story follows a man on a journey to restore his faith while supporting his family's livelihood during one of the most difficult chapters of his life.

To bring the screenplay to life, a group of actors performed one of its most emotional scenes during the festival. Taylor's lead actor, Alex Romen, who portrays the screenplay's central character, earned the Best Actor Award for his moving performance in the scene. The powerful presentation resonated deeply with audiences, highlighting the screenplay's themes of perseverance, faith, and hope in the face of adversity.

Another notable award winner, Job Michiel van Zuijlen, is a returner who won the “Best Soundtrack Animation Award” for his animated film “Knock Knock on Wood” in 2021 at the Epic ACG Fest. Job returned, this time attending UMFF 2026 with his latest feature film, “Khentopia,” and won “Best Animation Feature Film” at the Award Ceremony on day 3.

Job Michiel describes his feature, Khentopia, as “a peaceful society on planet Zeeray that uses ethereal energy generated through chanting to power a protective shield surrounding the planet. One day, a raider ship destroys this shield, leading to devastating consequences as Khentopia and several of its inhabitants are hurled into a hostile parallel universe…” This story explores the resilience of its characters while they confront challenges that test their beliefs, courage, and sense of community.

A notable newcomer this year was Dr. Ken Gray, who was a renowned Holistic Physician and licensed Doctor of Oriental Medicine. He is the host for his TV show, which he is launching called “Maximum Health: Road to Wellness - Ohana on Oahu,” and won an award for “Best TV Episode” at UMFF 2026.

The featured episode takes viewers across the island of Oahu, where Dr. Gray examines the connection between health and community while visiting cultural landmarks, wellness centers, and sustainable agricultural sites. Accompanied by family members, the program highlights the Hawaiian value of ohana, meaning family, and emphasizes the importance of connection and well-being. During his UMFF screening and discussion, Dr. Gray shared that a future episode of the series will take audiences to Dubai, where he plans to explore health, culture, innovation, and modern lifestyles in one of the world's most dynamic cities.

Throughout the festival's panels and screenings, audiences enjoyed a memorable and eye-catching dance showcase by Stephanie Stevenson's Salsa Dance Studio, the SS Salsa Kids. Stephanie Stevenson and her daughter are known for performing a solo dance feature during Bad Bunny's 2026 Super Bowl Halftime Show.

The SS Salsa Kids delighted audiences with an energetic salsa routine and a Cumbia performance set to the new single by Spanish and English singer-songwriter Angel Peaches, "Quédate." The performances brought vibrant energy to the festival and celebrated the diversity of multicultural music and dance.

Another standout performance came from a traditional Aztec dance group. Dressed in elaborate feathered headdresses and traditional regalia, the performers moved through the theater while cleansing the theater with sage, a cultural spiritual practice. The rhythmic sounds of drums and synchronized stomping echoed throughout the venue, creating a powerful and mesmerizing cultural experience that left a lasting impression on attendees.

UMFF's mission continues to be reflected in the impact of each year's festival. Filmmakers, artists, and audiences from around the world come together to share their work, celebrate cultural diversity, and build meaningful connections within the global creative community. "This year we received over 100 films and selected 62, and every year we learn and grow, creating an even better show and experience for next year's event," said Lynn Tang, founder and chairwoman of the Universe Multicultural Film Festival.
