Vigil To Honor South Gate Detective Killed In Crash

SOUTH GATE, CA — The community will gather together to mourn the death of a South Gate Police Department detective outside the police station Tuesday night.

Det. Alexis Gonzalez died in a crash Sunday night on the Firestone Boulevard on-ramp to the northbound 605 Freeway, the California Highway Patrol reported. The five-year veteran of the department leaves behind his parents and two brothers. His sudden passing shocked fellow police officers Monday.

Dozens of law enforcement officers took part in a procession to escort Gonzalez's body from the hospital to the coroner's office in downtown Los Angeles. The South Gate Police Department set up a memorial in front of its headquarters in honor of Gonzalez. The memorial includes a patrol SUV, flowers and a photo of Gonzalez.

Tuesday's memorial vigil will take place at 7 p.m. outside the South Gate Police Department at 8620 California Ave., at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Gonzalez crashed for still-unknown reasons and died a St. Francis Medical Center shortly after.

"Detective Gonzalez is survived by his parents and two brothers," the police department said in an Instagram post. "We ask that you keep the Gonzalez family and our department in your prayers. We thank all of our law enforcement partners for their support during this difficult time."
