Weekend-Long Closure Of 405 Freeway Begins Friday

LOS ANGELES, CA — Traffic is expected to be impacted on the 405 Freeway and nearby roads this weekend when construction will shut down several lanes on both sides of the interstate near the Sepulveda Pass.

And another weekend-long closure is planned for March.

The freeway will be reduced to three lanes in each direction in the area of the Getty Center from 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6 through 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9. Additionally, one off-ramp will be closed.

The planned closures are as follows:

Northbound 405 Freeway

• The interstate will be reduced to three lanes between a point just south of the Getty Center Drive/Sepulveda Boulevard off-ramp and a point just north of Bel Air Crest Road.
• The Getty Center Drive off-ramp will be closed.

Southbound 405 Freeway

• Reduced to three lanes between the Skirball Center Drive/Mulholland Drive on-ramp and the Getty Center Drive/Sepulveda Boulevard on-ramp.

Officials urged drivers to consider the following alternate routes:

Sepulveda Boulevard to northbound 405: Drive north on Sepulveda, then east/north on Skirball Center Drive to the northbound freeway on-ramp.

Sepulveda Boulevard to southbound 405: Drive south on Sepulveda, then south on Church Lane to the Sunset Boulevard southbound freeway on-ramp.

Construction has been underway on the 405 Freeway in and near the Sepulveda Pass since June as part of the I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project, a $143.7 million project to improve safety and mobility along the freeway and extend the life of its pavement, according to Caltrans.

Many of the associated road closures occur overnight. But big traffic headaches have come courtesy of what Caltrans calls Extended Weekend Closures — that's when crews shut down lanes and/or ramps on Friday night and keep them closed until Monday morning.

Those weekend-long closures will happen at a pace of about every other week — or twice a month.

Caltrans does not have a finalized schedule for each weekend-long closure, but has already announced one planned for March 6-9.
