Major Freeway To Be Partially Closed This Month

Another weekend-long closure of part of the 405 Freeway is set for April. Here's what to know to avoid the worst of it.

UPDATE, April 9: Caltrans has rescheduled the closures planned for April 10-13 due to forecast rainy weather.

EARLIER: LOS ANGELES, CA — Traffic will be impacted on the 405 Freeway and nearby roads in April when construction will shut down several lanes of the interstate near the Sepulveda Pass over an entire weekend.

The northbound freeway will be reduced to three lanes from 10 p.m. Friday, April 10 through 5 a.m. Monday, April 13. Additionally, one ramp will be closed.

  • The interstate will be reduced to three lanes between Skirball Center Drive and Ventura Boulevard.
  • The Skirball Center Drive on-ramp to the northbound 405 will be closed.

The southbound freeway will not be impacted by the closure.

Officials urged drivers to consider the following alternate routes:

Sepulveda Boulevard to northbound 405: Drive north on Sepulveda to the Greenleaf/Ventura Blvd on-ramp to the northbound 405.

Construction has been underway on the 405 Freeway in and near the Sepulveda Pass since June as part of the I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project, a $143.7 million project to improve safety and mobility along the freeway and extend the life of its pavement, according to Caltrans.

Many of the associated road closures occur overnight. But big traffic headaches have come courtesy of what Caltrans calls Extended Weekend Closures — that's when crews shut down lanes and/or ramps on Friday night and keep them closed until Monday morning.

Those weekend-long closures will happen at a pace of about every other week — or twice a month.

Caltrans does not have a finalized schedule for each weekend-long closure, but said there will be about 25 total weekend-long closures.
