The scammers will likely use fictitious names and badge numbers, and in some cases, the caller ID may appear as "City of Los Alamitos" or "Los Alamitos Police Department," authorities said.

"These calls are fraudulent in nature," the department said in a statement. "Please remember that scammers can manipulate caller ID information to appear legitimate. If you receive a similar phone call, do not provide any personal or financial information."

No further information was immediately available.
